    BIOGRAPHY

Alison Elizabeth Larter was born on February 28, 1976 in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. The youngest daughter of Danfort and Margaret Larter considered herself a tomboy growing until she turned 13. "Suddenly, I grew 6 inches and gained a couple of pounds. I looked like a girl and that's when photos were sent into agencies. I started going up to New York when I was 14. It was such an amazing, fun thing." Ali was signed by the prestigious Ford Modeling Agency, and traveled all over the world. It was while working as a model in Italy when she met hew now good friend Amy Smart. Later, the two girls became roommates in Los Angeles.

In November, 1996, Ali was on the cover of Esquire Magazine as Allegra Coleman, Hollywood's newest Dream Girl. The editors of the magazine wanted to illustrate the hyperbole of Hollywood hype, and selected Ali to play the fictitious actress. This turned out to be the turning point in her career, as everyone wanted to know who she was! "It kind of made the industry laugh at itself," Ali has said. "And when that door opened and people wanted to know who I was, you bet I dived in." The hoax landed her an agent and soon Ali started guest starring on shows like "Chicago Hope" and "Just Shoot Me". After that, she appeared twice on season two of "Dawson's Creek", as Pacey's object of affection, Kristy Livingstone.

Meanwhile, Amy Smart had already appeared in several movies. "When I quit modeling I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life," Ali told the Courier Post in 1999. "Amy said, 'It can't hurt to go on a couple of auditions.' I did, and I loved it." It was Amy who suggested that Ali should audition for Varsity Blues. The film, which starred Hollywood's It-boy James van der Beek, became a surprise box office hit and launched the careers of both girls. Ali, however, is not competitive. "Amy Smart is still my best friend and if it came down to the two of us after the same role, I'd give it to her. Acting is my job. It's not my life." And from that moment on, Ali would be referred to as the whipped cream-bikini-girl.

She followed it up with a role in the teen romcom Drive Me Crazy, in which she co-starred as Adrian Grenier's sexy ex, who is quite different from her Varsity Blues cheerleader. "She's the kind of girl who goes against the grain," says Ali. "Dulcie is very cool; she likes alternative music and is the polar opposite of Nicole's friends with her taste in clothes and make-up. Those things aren't important to her." Next she took her first step into the horror genre, starring opposite Academy Award-winner Geoffrey Rush and Famke Janssen in the hit remake House on Haunted Hill.

But it was the hit horror/thriller Final Destination with Devon Sawa which earned her critical praise. Her strong role as Clear Rivers won her the Young Hollywood Award for Best Breakthrough Performance Female. She followed it up with the surprise box office hit Legally Blonde. "It was so much fun working with Reese [Witherspoon]," said Ali. "It was such a laugh. I went for it all the way. It was the first time I was cast as a character actress and I loved it."

A supporting role as jewel thief in the Kevin Smith comedy Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back followed, as well as a co-starring role in the western American Outlaws with Colin Farrell and Varsity Blues-buddy Scott Caan. While both movies underperformed at the box office, neither tainted her promising career.

Ali was approached in the early pre-production stages of Final Destination 2 to reprise her role and to help bring the project to life. "As an actress, she was invaluable," says producer Craig Perry. "As a partner in the process, she was invaluable, because she's the only connection really to the first movie. We needed to have her ground the entire thing and she really did help us." Like its predecessor, FD2 was another hit at the box office, grossing nearly $50 million domestically.

Immediately after wrapping FD2 in Canada, Ali moved to New York. "I don't want to be an L.A. actress," she says. "It's not what I aspire to be. I looked at my life and just decided, you know, I have to change something, and that meant physically moving myself to New York City. I literally went from Vancouver to New York City, checked into the W with my dog, got a broker, got an apartment, sent for my things and didn't go back for four months." In the May 2007 issue of Self, Ali expressed she had left Hollywood because she had realized she had changed into a person she didn't like. "I kept getting caught up in things like how I looked, what I wore, what restaurant table I sat at. I felt all these incredibly superficial things becoming prominent in my life, and I knew I had to make changes."

Ali spent the next few years traveling the world. "It was time for me to grow on a personal level. I knew there was a kind of woman I wanted to be - someone who is generous and enjoys life is respected and giving - and if I didn't take a break from Los Angeles and this business, I wasn't going to grow into that person." In 2005 she decided to give acting another shot, but had trouble getting a job. "I was getting responses I wasn't fresh anymore," she said in Self magazine. However, Ali was determined not to let this get her down. "I followed my gut. Sometimes there are sad days, but you've got to keep pushing through."
Things changed when she received the script for a new series called "Heroes", and was cast in the role of Niki. "It had been a tough part to cast. We saw everybody for this role. Then Ali read for the part and just owned it from the second she walked in. It was a very impressive audition. She's a very thoughtful actress and really works hard at it," said "Heroes" creator Tim Kring. "Heroes" was the new hit series of the 2006/2007 season and was even nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Drama. Suddenly, the actress who couldn't get a job was one of the hottest stars in Hollywood.

2007 in particular was an eventful year for Ali. It saw her return to the big screen with the releases of Resident Evil: Extinction and Marigold. She landed the cover of the October issue of Cosmopolitan, and was named one of People magazine's 10 Best Dressed Women of the year. But with no doubt, boyfriend Hayes MacArthur's wedding proposal in December must have been the high light of her year! "I told my boyfriend after three weeks that I wanted to marry him and that we could do it tomorrow," Ali told Cosmo. "I look forward to that time when I'm home with babies." It seems like Ali is getting her wish!
